Renting vs. Buying Home Medical Equipment: Which Makes Sense?

When someone needs a patient lift, power wheelchair, scooter or pressure-relief mattress, one of the first questions is whether to rent or buy. The answer mostly comes down to how long you'll need it.

When renting makes sense

  • Short-term recovery: after surgery, a fracture or a hospital stay, when you expect to need the equipment for weeks or a few months.
  • You're not sure how long: renting lets you start right away and decide later.
  • Trying before buying: renting a power chair or scooter first shows whether it suits the person and the home.
  • Palliative care: families often prefer not to buy equipment for a short period.
  • Lower upfront cost: you pay monthly instead of the full price at once.

When buying makes sense

  • Long-term or permanent needs: if you'll use it for many months or years, buying usually costs less overall.
  • A specific model or fit: buying lets you choose exactly the size, features and seat width you want.
  • Funding is available: some programs and insurance plans help pay for purchased equipment. Ask your discharge planner, therapist or insurer what applies to you.

A simple way to decide

Divide the purchase price by the monthly rental price. That tells you roughly how many months of renting add up to buying. If you expect to need it for longer than that, buying is likely the better deal. If not, rent.
